Applicants Needed for the Douglas County Board of Property Tax Appeals

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners are accepting applications for additional representatives for the Board of Property Tax Appeals (BoPTA). The BoPTA is a mandated special board that consists of three non-office holding residents of the county, per ORS 309.067. The BoPTA is responsible for hearing taxpayer appeals for reduction of the real market or assessed value of property. All members of the BoPTA Board (both regular and alternates) are selected by the County Clerk from a pool of members appointed by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners. Members must be residents of the county who are not employees or members of a governing body of the county or of any taxing district within the county. Though not required, well qualified candidates:
- Have a working knowledge of the local real estate market (preferably both residential and commercial).
- Are willing to participate in public hearings, can quickly review documentation while listening to the public, and can make reasonable decisions with the affected parties in attendance.
- Have mediation skills, real estate appraisal experience, a financing or title/escrow related background, building or developing experience or other property related field.
- Are familiar with Oregon property taxes.
The term of each member of BoPTA begins on the date of appointment (appointments will be completed on or before October 15, 2020) and ends on June 30, 2021, or when the member resigns or is replaced, whichever occurs first. Citizens interested in being considered for Board of Property Tax Appeals position should submit an application to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners. Applications must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1, 2020.
