Reserve Deputy Sheriff
Volunteer Position

The purpose of the reserve program is to assist where and as directed by the Sheriff in the mission and goals of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.  Except for special duties, Reserve Deputies will be partnered with full time, non-probationary supervising deputies during a patrol shift.  Under the direction of the supervising deputy and Sergeant/Corporal, Reserve Deputies will carry out the duties of a police officer to enforce the laws of this state and County and to provide the residents of this County with a full range of law enforcement and related social services on demand as prescribed by Oregon law, County ordinance, and judicial precedent.  Activities include enforce the laws of this state and County; provide service of court documents; enforce traffic laws; operate emergency response vehicles; stop vehicles and pedestrians for enforcement of state traffic and criminal laws; inspect vehicles; serve arrest and search warrants; effect the arrest of suspects; write reports; read and interpret legal document decisions; use a computer; use a firearm and such non-lethal weaponry as required with a high degree of accuracy; operate a two-way radio system under normal and stressful conditions, work with complex technologies, demonstrate effective communications skills, and work both as a team member and independently.  A volunteer my be called upon to testify in court proceedings; participate in special enforcement activities (marijuana eradication, DUII task force, etc.); perform support functions for other agencies on a routine and emergency basis; respond to nuisance complaints involving noise or animals; provide information to public on miscellaneous topics, process found property; search for missing persons; and mediate neighborhood disputes.

NO COMPENSATION. The position of Reserve Deputy Sheriff is a voluntary community service.  Uniforms and training will be provided.  Work-related meals and mileage for use of personal vehicle will be reimbursed as appropriate.

The State of Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) has set the following minimum standards:
1)
       U.S. citizen;
2)
       At least 21 years of age by the time of certification which is mandated to be within one year of service;
3)
       No convictions by any state or federal government agency of a crime punishable by imprisonment in a state or federal prison;
4)
       Good moral character as determined through background investigation.
5)
       Pass a physical examination by a licensed physician to meet physical requirements, such as: corrected vision shall be at least 20/30 in each eye and have normal color perception, and hearing test;
6)
       High school graduate or GED certification;
7)
       Driving record must be free of convictions for hazardous moving violations within the previous three years;
8)
       Possession of a valid Oregon driver’s license at time of appointment.

Requires keyboarding experience.  Preference will be given to applicants who are currently a reserve with one-year of experience with another agency. In addition preference will be given to candidates who shall complete or completed within one year, a certificate of completion and/or diploma from a reserve academy.  Retired law enforcement may be considered if they have been through a police academy.

All applicants must take the ORPAT and POST test and make the score available for the recruitment process. v Initial screen based on above minimum qualifications; v oral interview; v extensive background investigation; v psychological test; v physical exam and chemical detection screen.  NOTE: Applicants may be disqualified after unsuccessful completion of any phase of evaluation.

Hours of volunteer activity could include shifts, weekends, and holidays.  Activity is primarily performed in the field and from an emergency vehicle.  Requires bending, color identification, gripping with hands and fingers, keyboarding, hearing voice conversation, ability to lift prone (unwilling or unconscious) persons, operating passenger vehicles, pulling, pushing, reaching, running, sitting, standing for long periods of time, twisting and walking/running over rough terrain, exposure to dust/pollen, extreme outside temperatures, noise and contagious diseases.
