PARK LANDSCAPER
Pay Range GC11

INTRODUCTION

This classification performs skilled and semi-skilled duties landscape maintenance of River Forks Park; requires operation of 72-inch front riding lawnmower; completes minor repair of grounds and irrigation system.

EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES

(Duties assigned to this classification include, but are not limited to, the following examples.)

1. Perform a variety of groundskeeping and landscaping duties, such as: mow, plant, cultivate, fertilize, prune, vacuum and/or blow leaves and grass, schedule application of pesticides.

2 Provide maintenance work at park, such as: spread bark mulch, service and repair irrigation system.

3. Operate hand gardening power tools; perform basic repair and maintenance of equipment. Operate 72-inch front riding lawnmower.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIRED BY THIS POSITION

Knowledge of: Reasonable knowledge of horticulture methods, principles, practices, irrigation, plants, fertilizers, pests and diseases; basic knowledge of operation, maintenance and minor repair of hand power tools and equipment. Skill in: Safe operation of power tools and equipment. Ability to: Communicate effectively in oral and written forms; adjust to priority changes; estimate time and materials and manage time efficiently; utilize problem identification and resolution techniques; remain calm and use good judgment during confrontational or high pressure situations; courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees and the public.

Education, experience and training: Two years progressively responsible work experience in landscaping or groundskeeping OR a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and training. At time of appointment, must possess a valid Oregon driver's license.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS OF THIS POSITION

Work is performed with supervision from park operations supervisor. Recurring routine assignments are independently performed by employee on basis of past experience. Employee estimates time and materials and manages time efficiently. Employee uses initiative and judgment in completing routine assignments and interpretation of general administrative or operational policies and procedures is sometimes necessary. Significant deviations require prior approval. Work is checked at completion of projects. Incumbent may or may not work in proximity of supervisor.

GUIDELINES

Work is performed within established departmental policy and procedure, horticulture and landscaping reference materials, equipment manuals. Employee uses judgment in determining appropriate guideline and procedure, but then follows closely due to nature of work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Regular and consistent attendance is required.  Work is performed in outside environment and may require bending, climbing, gripping of hands, hearing voice conversation, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds, operating riding mower for up to eight-hours per day, operating power tools, pushing and pulling garbage cans and tables, reaching, shoveling, stooping and walking. Work is performed in an environment which involves everyday risks or discomforts and sometime adverse weather conditions. A reasonable amount of driving is required.
