INFORMATION SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN

INTRODUCTION
All classifications provide support to county departments by evaluating computing system needs, receiving, testing and installing hardware, software and peripheral equipment, solving user operation problems and supporting computer operations.
EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES
(Duties assigned to this classification include, but are not limited to, the following examples. Any one position may not perform all listed tasks.)
1. Install,
implement,
test and
service
computer
hardware,
software and
peripherals;
upgrade,
inventory and
assist in
maintaining
systems,
including
complex
software
applications
and local area
networks; make
adaptations
based on user
needs.
2.
Troubleshoot
and diagnose
system
failures to
isolate the
source of the
problem
between
equipment,
cables, system
software
and/or
application
software;
implement
solutions to
user problems,
including
testing,
removing/replacing
and/or
cleaning bad
components.
3. Analyze
user needs for
computer
systems;
prioritize
requests
relative to
need and
availability;
perform cost
analyses to
determine the
most effective
approach to
meeting user
needs; obtain
and provide
budgetary
information
regarding
system
applications
and recommend
alternatives
to users.
4. Receive,
test and set
up computer
systems;
verify
accuracy of
orders
received.
5. Develop and
implement
training for
users on new
and existing
systems.
6. Analyze and
correct
hardware and
software
utilization
and problems,
using
departmental
and industry
standards.
7. Assist in
the creation
and
maintenance of
documentation
of user
procedures,
hardware and
equipment
inventory.
8. Operate
computer
consoles and
related
peripheral
equipment to
process jobs
and monitor
system
performance;
analyze and
troubleshoot
hardware
problems;
report to
vendor.
9. Install,
test and
maintain data
and
telecommunications
equipment and
cabling.
10. Remain current on technology developments through staff meetings, vendor demonstrations, technical literature, classes and seminars, etc.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THIS POSITION
Knowledge of: Considerable knowledge of computer operating principles, capabilities, and general uses; considerable knowledge of recommended computer hardware, software and peripheral equipment. Skill in: Diagnosing and correcting computer hardware and software problems; guiding and encouraging computer system users and translating technical instructions into understandable language. Ability to: Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; install, test, operate and adjust computer hardware, software and peripherals, using reference manuals and vendor-supplied technical support facilities for problem resolution; reason logically when analyzing data and utilize problem identification and resolution techniques; make decisions independently in accordance with established policy and use initiative and judgment in completing tasks and responsibilities; work within a team concept; plan and manage time efficiently; courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, vendors and the public.
Education, experience and training: Associate's degree in computer science or related field and two years experience in computer operations or a related field OR four years experience in computer operations or a related field OR a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
Desirable qualifications: Knowledge of department policies and procedures; knowledge of county purchasing policies and procedures.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS OF THIS POSITION
Work is performed under general direction of the data processing director. Recurring routine assignments are independently performed by employee on basis of past experience. Employee receives general instructions regarding scope of and approach to projects or assignments, but procedures and problem resolution are left to the employee's discretion and interpretation. Work is reviewed periodically to ensure determinations and decisions made are in accordance to department policy and procedures.
GUIDELINES
Work is performed within department policies and procedures; reference manuals for hardware, software and peripheral equipment; in-house microcomputer documentation; standards manual for information systems; operating systems manuals; and other vendor supplied documentation. The employee uses considerable judgment in interpreting guidelines and applying solutions from available alternatives.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Regular and consistent attendance is required. Work is performed in an office environment. Installation of hardware and peripheral devices may require bending, crawling, hearing voice conversation, keyboarding, kneeling and lifting up to 60 pounds.
